I suspect that to be the case in most places.  I don't get to close to Rocky either.  But I am fond of him.  The skunk came with him last year when I had a 20 lb bag of bird seed break in my yard.  They came and ate...I wasn't opening the door to chase a skunk away LOL!

As for Rocky here.  I tend to think he was once someone's pet because he wants to be friends.  I won't touch him and the cats (there are two from the house next door that they left behind) seem to be in charge with him.  They cuss him and he runs away.  I don't know and won't risk being bitten by him, but I do love to watch him.

Around here, raccoons and skunks have a tendency to carry rabies. I rarely see the coons. They are resourceful animals, that's for sure. Very cute.

Bel, I love watching wild critters but I don't mess with them.   You just never know.

yep, they're pretty cute all right. and i know you mean well but i'd think

twice about feeding them.  it's not natural.  if they grow to trust you, they can grow to trust others, taking them off their guard, survival-style.  to you they're welcome, to other homes, not so much.  one piece of meat laced with poison and adios little guy.  i really don't want to be a wet blanket but i grew up in the country and saw this type of thing happen again and again.

and mademoiselle is right, rabies are a HUGE threat.  you're not going to know the animal has rabies until it has rabies at which point it's too late anyway.  the only person who can step in then is animal control and a gun.

but bless you for loving them.

I won't touch him

I am a firm believer that wild animals belong in the wild.  It seems though "Rocky" that's what I named him last year seems to think I am his friend.  I'll bring out the meat and I swear he smells it before I hit the door and he starts rolling over and looking cute, I toss it, he eats.

As for the babies...my firend has connections that can help her out with the health issues.

That's adorable ...

Be careful, though.  Racoons are the #1 carrier of rabies in the U.S.

P.S. Which one was Flower?  The skunk?

So I'd open each cage. I'd unlock every pen,
let the animals go, and start over again.
And, somehow or other, I think I could find
Some beasts of a much more un-usual kind.
