I understand what is being said below, but to label these people as mere kooks and leave it at that is a mistake. These are no kooks. They may be volatile, unwise and impressionable youths for the most part, but they have all their wits about them and they hate Canada and its western way of life. Philosophically, they are an extension of Al Quaeda. Our much vaunted cultural mosaic and its benefits which accrue to them mean nothing at all. Canada's cultural mosaic was concocted by a Liberal Goverment in another era, an era which predates 9/11. To expect that mosaic to have survived 9/11 unbruised is expecting too much. Those idealogical days are gone. Political correctness must be stared down. Peaceful and moderate Muslims have just as much to lose as the rest of us, and they should not take offence when we exercise measures which cause us to focus on individuals of Arabic descent. It's just common sense. Otherwise, PC becomes nothing more than a Trojan Horse.

Maybe I should have stated that those involved were sympathizers of a more
radical path of Islam, FranklyMyDear. Your point is well taken. So sad, like the evangelical radicals in the United States, those who follow the Wahhabist doctrine (or one like it) taint their religion.

Just another step in creating the worldwide umma, Lensman. Unfortunately,
that means ultimately every nation is on the list. This particular operation is going to have far-reaching repercussions. It has heightened awareness of our northern border here in the U.S. (although, for the life of me, I can't understand why
BOTH borders aren't discussed when talking about security. It must be the language thing). And no telling how many people, including extranationals, are involved.

I've read teh comments....and am disgusted...
Muslim sympathizers? No people, the group rounded up in Canada were indeed of Asian and African descent and between them, they attended two different mosques in Mississagua, a suburb of Toronto. They should not however, be classified as Muslim sympathizers!! What a stupid expression. They were in fact, zealot (kooks who think it's OK to kill innocents simply because of their western beliefs) sympathizers who were out to get a little of their own wrong headed glory. Their leader, the 43 yr old, was twice banned from his mosque for preaching and inciting hatred in the parking lot of the mosque, but nothing was done other than a quiet reprimand by the local Imam...what's so bloody ironic though, is that Canada is a hugely successful mutlicultural mosaic (the US is a melting pot) with people able to live and practice their customs and beliefs without fear of reprimand; the majority of people in Canada, however, live liberal, secular lives...few white baptist crazy zealots here, few crazy Muslim zealots who twist and turn the soft and gentle teaching of the Koran into some weird death to all kind of doctrine....Muslim sympathizers? Nope. Kook sympathizers? Yes.

Your instincts are correct. No Presbyterians involved in this caper. Nearly all involved have Arabic names, although one, I believe, is from Trinidad. Canada has been in Afghanistan since 9/11. Canadian soldiers have been killing Taliban and Canadian soldiers have been killed by Taliban. We are on the list. There's a reason for us to be on our toes.

CNN has been trumpeting the case all day, displaying connections
between al-Qaeda members and such. They're promising more arrests, R.I. This could get fairly huge. I also saw where the Muslim community is circling its wagons, so to speak.
