This Comment...
...has all the makings of a great post, Xeno-x!
Another big factor, i believe, is poverty, much of it created in the lasst 20 years by a severely flawed 'free trade' system. Poverty creates hopelessness, and people without hope have nothing to lose, and people with nothing to lose....well, need I go on?
And here's a classic example of the short-sightedness you refer to. We know poverty underlies many of the 'terrorism' problems in the world as does the policies of Israel. Now, we have the two combining. Israel, the US and the EU have come together to starve the Palestinians of cash, food, medicine and so on. The US and the EU have stopped all funds flowing into the Palestinian government (because the people democratically elected a goup that the democracy-spreading Western world doesn't like!) and Israel have stopped handing over cash that they collect on behalf of the Palestinians. As a result, tensions are rising within Palestine. Children are dying in the hospitals because of the lack of basic medicines (just like pre-war, sanction-starved Iraq). And we're moving ever closer to forcing a break in the year-long ceasefire.
And all in the name of Peace!!
Give me a fucking break.
Thanks for reading, Xeno-x, and offering me an opportunity to rant!

putting aside this massacre
Bush's speech outlines the undelrying causes.
It is so full of half truths, disparities, newspeak.
Like installing democracy in the two countries -- hardly. Both
countries are only nominally controlled by the U.S. and allies. The
Taliban are still quite active in Afghanistan -- U.S. interests control
only a small segment of the territory.
CBS evening news reported last night that incidents of IED's has risen
instead of dropping -- U.S. forces have to shift from one location to
another to try to contain this (apparently quite unsuccessfully).
There is a hallucinatory air about his continued statement of "we
won;'t back down". He doesn't tell us here the entire truth of
the situation. The appearance from his speaches is that this is
limited to these two countries, when anyone who honestly appraises the
situation knows quite differently.
The reason for the WTC disaster is opposition to WTO policies, for one
thing, and the State of Israel, for another. We aren't told
that. Had we paid attention anbd made attempts to resolve these
two things some time ago, 9/11 might not have happened.
And of course our Bushie baby and his fellow minions of the U.S.
Military-Industrial complex will not admit that it's not only the
Moslem world that has something against us. We have made abrasive
relations with South and Central America, Africa, others. SE
Asia? -- Indian subcontinent? -- it's our sweatshop garment
factories for which the people are thankful, I guess -- and the many
centers where our 800 calls are answered.
And then there's China. They are in it for their own
self-advancement. They have made it pretty plain that they will
oppose the U.S. in certain circumstances -- like if they decide to
invade Taiwan -- and their human rights record is atrocious (but we
don't hear that do we? ) trade with them enhances our
corporations -- but at the same time creates a large trade
imbalance. They are like the 800 pound gorilla -- where does he
sit? anywhere he wants.
Concentrating on this, exempting all else, something bad is bound to happen.
And this is an endless war if pursued as it is being presently pursued.
We don;'t back down -- we will be defeated.
