Your poem touched my heart and moved me very much, and I pray for your son and his unit's safe and speedy return.  Soldiers past are in my thoughts and prayers always, but especially this weekend. I used to sell poppies for the American Legion, when I was kid and my grandfather was alive, a WWI veteran. God bless and keep them all safe. 

BTW, speaking of combat poetry, have you read any Wilfred Owen's poetry. He was a WWI English soldier, who wrote a poem called "Dulce Et Decorum Est" and others about his service.  Some things are easiest spoken of in the language of poetry, which speaks from the heart.
