weed your own garden before you get to figuring out what needs to be weeded elsewhere.

odd -- but I don't think it's ours to weed anyway -- none of us sees enough of the picture.

none of us knows enought of the process to be effective.

Well, I am with you up to the burning part..
I don't see a need for "pain" of any sort to remove that attachment to self. Awareness, yes...

Xeno -
I like the onion peel analogy - that's a great explanation of what we must do to the self, so we can reach the Self.

Greater good?
Ah, but what about the question of the greater good? Sometimes it is necessary to hurt others. This may sound rather Machiavellian. But remember, it takes weeding to make a beautiful garden. Sometimes the garden of humanity must be weeded as well. In our societies, we will live with what we build and create, but also what we fail to destroy.

My humble opinion. God cannot be limited by dogma. Boxes cannot contain the mystery. The ‘all pervading reality’ is bigger, greater, more awesome than any finite mind can imagine. Religion being man-made, Truth is the exclusive property of no religion. The basic tenets of all religions agree on core principals: love God, love man as yourself, do good, help others, refrain from ‘sin.’ My teacher says, if you cannot do these things, then at least, do not hurt anyone. If you can achieve only this, not hurting others, that is enough. Samhain_Moon
