I was just thinking of this today. Although I'm only 35, I remember
growing up only three miles from the closest missile bunker (and there were many more around us) aimed straight at the USSR. We were repeatedly told that, should Russia attack the US, we would be ground zero. The bunker is gone now, and so is the threat.
Back to present...
While I do agree with much of what you say, I think there is a clear delineation between the old Soviet Union and (some of) the Arab world of today. Russia never slaughtered over 2,000 American civilians in an unprovoked attack on American soil.
Do I think we're going about business the wrong way? Yes. Does that mean we should sit back and wait for the next attack? No.
