...I think its fair to say that Americans in general are a lot more swayed by media, and a lot more insular, than we are over here. I mean, a place governed by a senate where only 12% of Senators even have a passport must be just embarassing, isn't it? How can they hope to build an American empire if they never even leave Kansas??
Also, I've seen more hours of US news than I care to remember, and it is truly pathetic at times. They'll cover a small flood in Missouri before a massacre in Darfor.
So, open your eyes a moment and just accept that a LOT of people in Europe - politicians, activists, lawyers and others - talk openly now about the Bush regime and use terms like Crimes Against Humanity. I know it's hard to comprehend in that insular, cushioned little world called America, but beyond your (soon-to-be-sealed??) borders, the Washington Concensus is under massive scrutiny and subject to huge criticism.
There is no "good" to speak of right now.
Thanks for reading.

NO! You're there, we're here. You see us through a distorted lens which is influenced by the anti-American BBC and Al Jazeera! You at times seem to be sympathetic to all the terrorist forces which are intent on destroying us! You look for the bad, dismiss the good. Maybe you think that's politically chic or maybe you're just not old enough to know better!
I tend to lean toward the latter!

...don't get all smug on me now! You know as well as I do that the political scene in the US is at least as fucked as ours is - Karl Rove in deep doo-doo, Bush skating close to impeachment, and already there's talk in the Rest of the World that, once these clowns are out of office, their lucrative speaking careers will be severely curtailed because many countries will be prepared to arrest the likes of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld and put them on trial for crimes against humanity.
Remember what happened to pinochet when he came to Europe? Bush et al can expect the same treatment.
Cheers!

...you know one thing that would sort a lot of this out? Take away the salaries. If people truly wanted to help the country and the people and the planet, they'd be willing to do it on a voluntary basis (perhaps with some basic help with housing and expenses). Then, the greedy and corrupt would go off into arms dealing or drugs, and leave the job in the hands of people who truly care.

I question how much of this was "imported" from America.
It seems that such corruption is endemic within politics from every culture and country.
And regarding the peers -- looks to me like anyone with a few extra bucks could buy him or herself a peerage. Soon much of Britain will have the title "Honourable" so and so. Amusing.

How do you know when a politician is lying?
A. When his lips are moving... It's the same all over. :(

Politicians are politicians no matter where you go it seems
Politics
are all about power and not about doing what is right or helping the people out. Yet it is always politicians running thins
and rarely if ever doing it right. There
needs to be a way to get rid of the career politicians and really get it so the
people are having a true voice in things.

I don't think I could blame a guy for punching an egg-thrower. (If punching is what "thumping" means.) Egg throwing is not just incredibly rude, it's immature and useless. The thrower should be thumped just for stupidity.
But bullying workers into strikes -- that seems silly as well as wrong. If workers need to be bullied into it, they probably weren't that dissatisfied with work conditions in the first place and didn't find it in their interests to strike. But then again, I don't know about it because I've only heard the guy's name. It's a nice, classy name, at least.
I'm all with you about Blair, though. He has really been a disappointment, especially since 2002. I don't think he's a lap-dog to Bush; I think he's an avid, genuine supporter, more partner than poodle.
