symphony,
Thank you.  I try very hard to avoid being that way.  I see it so often that I have become quite good at catching myself doing it.  It is most often done without the person doing it being aware that they are doing it.  The biggest loss is to the person who does it, yet they so often see it the other way round.  It's quite amazing how often pshchology works backward from what people think.

I had to laugh at the last part of your post...
about putting others down to make yourself feel better...as I so know you don't mean that...

Jason,

Your statistics sound about right.  Yes, that first ten per cent does sound like the ones to step on in building up self esteem.  But then, maybe they are out to get you in order to build up their own self esteem.  Oh my!  The whole thing is taking on the nature of a logic trap.  Maybe it would be best if I just forget the whole thing.

Thanks for making me think about that a little farther.

I've heard that 10 per cent of people
are out to get you, ten per cent want to be your friends, and the other 80 per cent could care less either way. So, if you're going to put people down to lift your self exteem, you should make it that first 10 per cent that are out to get you anyway.

Mademoiselle,

To the best of my knowledge, that is, without any question, the most widely used technique for acheiving more elevated levels of self esteem.  The lower the level of self esteem, the higher the activity in the ''push down elevation'' methodology.

You really should try it sometime.  The only painful requirement is that one block out certain amounts of rationality.  That is quite easy for a mojority of the population, since they have so little rationality to ignore.  I must commend you on your fleetfooted graspituity.

So, I guess, what you're saying is:

"The easiest way to elevate oneself, is by putting others down."

I'll have to try that some time.

I doubt that policy will win you many friends, though.  At least, not here.
