You shouldn't chide yourself for being skeptical. When I discuss things with my wife, I always have arguments on both sides of a question and she always says, "why do you always look at things so pessimistically?"

We all have the tendency to filter things through our own experiences...
but I've found that this practice can sometimes lead us to quickly pass judgment on others. No matter what we think we know, the real challenge is to exit ourselves and actually try to see things from a different perspective altogether. Isn't this the only way to have a truly "open mind"?
It seems as though you're on the right track...
