Jazwolf...
Odd you should mention 5 acres, that is what I have. Only a small bit around the house is "official" lawn. Despite what I write, I really don't sweat my lawn that much. Mostly, I look at the guys that really bust their hump to keep the green patch green, and I dont' get it either.

I know what you mean
There are parks for that kind of thing. Lawn mowing businesses
thrive because some people buy back their weekend. I know a great story
about someone who lost the plot while mowing. I'll save it for a post.

Blogflogger--- So much time and wasted energy . . . I have a "psychic"
friend (she does readings) whose yard is incredibly cluttered with all kinds of ecletic things. During Halloween, she puts up "headstones" with poetic epitaphs. One of them invariably is about her neighbor, an ex-Marine, whose yard is as you would expect it to be--- uniform and lifeless. My friend exults in contaminating, through proximity, his obsessive-compulsive attempts at perfection.

Jazwolf - Okay. I'll go sit in the corner. I'll even add 5 minutes to my ..
... time out for failing to add the closing parentheses in my previous comment. – But, back to my original, smutty point, I have found it very entertaining to watch dueling wee-wees when two men in my neighborhood decide to compete for the “best lawn” award.

Blogflogger--- And in keeping with that line of thought, I have a friend
who keeps the exteriors of his vehicles immaculate, while the insides are dirty and cluttered. I'm just the opposite: I don't care so much about the outside, but keep the inside clean.

Jazwolf - I seem to have a twisted mind. More so than most, as I'm the ...
... only 'commenter' to have found telling humor in your statement, "I suspect motivation centers around [men]displaying ownership of the earth by turning it into an extension of one’s _______." (I'll go sit in the corner now.
I think a yard is frequently a reflection of an individual: boredon, obsessive-compulsive behavior, competition, false pride, inadequacy, and deception. Then sometimes, we just go along with the tone of the neighborhood.

Fourcats--- I think that control is exactly what it is about for many.
That's what I was talking about when I said some view lawns as extensions of their livingrooms. But you said it more clearly. Thanks.

how to tell when your neighborhood has increased in value?
when your neighbors start hiring gardeners.
i sometimes wonder if the rigorous lawn care is a result of feeling out of control elsewhere. i know someone whose life is in upheaval and she's lost herself to her garden, constantly fussing, trimming, planting, etc.

We're into low maintenance plants here too. Last year, we threw a package of wildflower seeds on the neighbor's mud patch because it looked so awful. When all the beautiful wildflowers came up, all the neighbors stopped to gawk. It was funny and the neighbors didn't mind.

My daughter suffers from this disease ( I call it a disease because she is obsessive about it) Her lovely home sits on the corner of the most prestigious street in town. She is always doing something in the lawn. I ask her why and she said to me " Because I don't want to keep up with the Jones, I want to be the Jones" Other than that quirk, she is normal and always tired!

Brettnik---- Love those rude notes and comments, such as "I guess
that you've been traveling and haven't had time to mow." Ha. Ha. For a few years at my old house, I'd mow--- or rather harvest--- portions of the yard only toward the end of the growing season.

So---we actually got a rude note for not manicuring our plot the way the subdivision wanted when I was a kid in Houston. Now I have a patch behind my Brooklyn house and crabgrass or whatever holds back the mud is ok with me.

'Once in a golden hour I cast to earth a seed, up there came a flower, the people said a weed.' TENNYSON
I don't get it either for I have been berated for pulling up flowers and condemned for arranging weeds in a vase. It is your piece of earth, your slice of heaven, enjoy
