Straightforward,
I think the term just sort of evolved into that meaning over the years. It may have started out with the best intentions, i.e., warm, home-loving, etc., but then evolved into plain Jane, wallflower, and then later into what some people describe as unattractive. I'm from the South. I've experienced all of those definitions. I guess it depends on who you ask, and what generation they're from.

Huh
I've never heard that before. I've always thought the word "homely" meant comfortable and welcoming, like being at home. Hmm.

Straightforward
I have heard that expression before, SF, but I've never read it. Vocally it is accompanied by a lifting of the eyebrows and a 'if you know what I mean.'
