it may be a protest to the establishment's church. Since it is a "heathen" church, then the members would choose a cornerstone that is opposite that of the "christian" church. Your comment reminds me of the way church resistance groups in the Philippines set themselves up against the "new" religion. There is a group called "babaylanes" (from the rootword babayi, woman) who set up a priesthood that is wholly for women as against the all-male priesthood of Catholicism. I am quite sure there are other examples one can find out there that illustrate how "old" religions (pre-Christian) counter the "new" religion (Catholic)

This might be off-the-wall, but your post reminds me of my great grandmother's church in Sweden nicknamed the "heathen" church One of the cornerstones was a runestone leftover from pagan times. Not sure how that fits in.
