I took your advice and went to hike during the weekend.
You can see, what was after ...in my last poem.

for six months i lived on vancouver island.

i had an office job at a mechanics garage during the week in vancouver so i'd take the ferry over and spend the week at a friend's place, then ferry back to the island for the weekend.

for the two hour ferry ride i got in the habit of taking my portable olivetti typewriter.  without even thinking about it, a children's story emerged about a family of mice named the Chesterfields.  the ferry passengers were in awe of my typewriter.  some of them had never even seen one in use before.

it was the freedom of not having to drive, of not travelling with someone, it was two hours of doing whatever i wanted.  and that was writing.   (i'm currently sitting at the exact same desk that used to be in my bedroom as a little girl, sitting on the same stool i sat on at the family kitchen table.  my mind can transport anywhere when i'm sitting on my stool, tapping keys.  if i only had more time!
