The port deal

I've been following the port deal, and I have some concerns, but I think it doesn't seem that bad after learning more about it.

First off, the deal doesn't give the arab company control over security in our ports.  Security remains in the hands of the Coast Guard and Homeland Security Department.  The only thing that will change is the ownership and some management of the commercial aspect of the port.

Second, Dubai has been a great ally in the war on terror.  Yes, they supported the Taliban before 9/11 and have a few other red flags; but since it started they've been helping us.  Their port, which we make great use of, gives us a very strategic port just miles from Iran.

Finally, if we reject them, it would weaken our allies in the arab world (and God knows we don't have enough of them) and strengthen our enemies.  It would be seen as a slap in the face to all arabs, and proof that America will never trust any of them (I'm not calling you a racist, I'm just telling you how it will be perceived).  So, rejecting the port deal outright seems to me like a bad idea.

I support a 30-45 day review to make sure nothing compromises our security, but I think we should get the facts before rushing to judgement.  (This comment is so long I might have to make it a post on my blog).

I actually live close to one of those ports, too.

I think ... I'm not 100% certain where the Philly one is (technically) located.
