Nautikos, I think perhaps he was telling the truth as he felt it was.
I see so much of the banter in the states is totally unbelievable. People who see two sides printed side by side they will so often take the one that would not hold water. Deception is rampant.

I know it sounds unbelievable. Had he been part of the ongoing problem, which covered a period of years, I would accept your interpretation of  his 'turning a blind eye' while this was going on. But he was definitely not involved. There is no question that he is a man of absolute integrity! I still do not see any other explanation than the one I am suggesting...

Nautikos - Sounds a bit unbelievable to me. I think most kids of 10 are...
... more realistic about human nature than your juge seems to be. Perhaps it was more of a "turn a blind eye".
