My thoughts on this subject...

I come from a family of diabetics and I can certainly appreciate the feelings of jensay, because of this. And I agree with her that these kids know what they can and cannot have, for most it isn't a feeling of jealousy or coveting. For instance on birthdays, I always have sugar free cookies and things of that nature there as well, that way everyone can celebrate together.

But, as to sweets in schools, our district adopted a policy similar, stating that nothing from home can be brought in. If it is a package of cookies then it's okay, but not if I make them and bring them. Does that make any sense. Isn't it every kids dream to have their mommy or daddy make cupcakes or cookies and send or bring them in?

And even worse is that you cannot bring in anything from a restaurant. Let me explain; My 10 year old son is home schooled, his 8 year old sister is not, so occasionally we will get something from Subway and take it to school to eat with my daughter, that way my son can still see his friends and we can have a special lunch together, again every child wants that, right? But, we cannot do that anymore because of the children whose parents can't afford to do it. The administration says that they don't want them to feel bad because their parents don't do that for them.

I think this is backwards thinking, personally.  Angel

Jensay, I understand. I am a Christian school administrator

Your welcome.  And I am sorry that I sort of contradicted myself by saying I disagreed and then agreed.  It's a little confusing on how I feel.  No, sweets should not be banished.  However, it would be nice to know that every child is eating healthy.  I'm not neurotic!  Really

Thank you Jensay, it is nice to see such training being given
and such a receptive heart.

I honestly feel that sweets should NOT be eliminated.  PARENTS are responsible to help their children understand differences.  It is what makes them unique.  My daughter does not feel slighted when she can not have the same treat as others.  In fact, she feels SPECIAL.  God made her that way, and we celebrate that!  It's not the sweets that are causing obesity in children.  It's the lack of guidance to a healthier lifestyle!

Jensay, I agree, but share with me how a child one feel if all others
have cupcakes, and she has celery.   Are these school districts right considering eliminating the cupcakes and other sweets?

Mountain... Alteratives are the only things that get us through
life, don't you think.  The freedom of choice.  Whether it be a cupcake or celery, or in my daughters case, life or death!!!

Jensay, Thank you for sharing that side -- it is one we often forget
Should we eliminate cupcakes and other sweets or should be provide alternatives like you mentioned..    Thanks for take me to task!

Mountain...
So sorry, but I have to disagree with you on behalf of my youngest daughter.  She is a diabetic AND allergic to chocolate!!  (A rough life for her when she gets older and craves those chocolate moments!)  Every year her teacher sends out a note about her and most parents have been wonderful about sending things that she can eat.  However, there are a few, who like you, feel that sweets are a right of passage.  I totally get that.  We have things that we leave in her classroom for such occasions.
