mainly agreed
i have a notion though that the priests sayed a distance from the moneychangers etc -- probably got some behind the scenes profit --
but much of what you say is true
except for our church
lots of people in all ranges of clothing
most of the poor would feel comfortable here

Routing out the Temple Theives

Jesus could see the suffering of the poor in Jeruselem in that the temple priest merchandised the sacrifical offering, requiring the penatant to purchase with coin, temple coins that were used to buy the sacrifical object offered to gain forgiveness or mercy from God.  Then, as it is today, the poor cannot afford this.  So added to their misery was the knowing that they could not keep the relationship with God as commanded and were "sinners" and "unclean" before God.

Jesus routed out this immoral practice by turning over the temple tables and putting the "righteous priests" to shame for denying the poor their sacred right to worship God as He commanded.  For this he was crucified as well as teaching self-governence and independence.

The Christian Churches today do just this very thing--only more subtle--through class prejudice.  They use the poor to point out sin and the "sinner" in society by imposing social "norm" in dress and appearence in order to attend worship services.  Those who can afford the cloth appear to be "blessed" by God while those who cannot are suffering, a curse by God perhaps, for not living so as to be blessed with "prosperity."  They also amplify this notion through the preaching of tithe which is what Jesus preached against on the premise that "all are saved" that believe in the ideals he was teaching--God is in your heart not in the institution of religion.

Keep up the good work--

don't get me started
that's the customary explanation.
I think it's sufficient to live withouit the guilt that religion tries to impose on people.
no matter the nature of whether something lies beyond death or not.

me?

I believe in reincarnation -- people keep on getting chances until they get it right enough to go to the next step, whatever that is.

but that remains to be seen.

But Xeno
Isn't that the whole point of salvation? To secure yourself a spot in heaven.

We're supposed to recognize a little bit of Christ in every human.

actually crimsoncarouse
i don't you'll find much talking aobut an afterworld
speaking in the language of his times, to the paradigm of the time,
he spoke of salvation for those who were considered not saved.
he preached that we are all right here and now.
people who've been saddled with great guilt  appreciate that.

Xewno-X This is the truth. Too many churches today are preaching
to the choir. We need to be out in the wayside meeting the needs of all the people. There are a lot of churches who are doing that too. But it is the down and out in all ways that need to be sought however they can be blessed.

It would have been hard for him to sell himself
to people who are doing well. Sinners, drunks, homeless, poor, etc. are easier targets when it comes to promising people a better life in the afterworld.
