The thing that the system doesn't provide is what mothers most need
Encouragement and support in helping them to develop their own
instincts and confidence. Usually the docs are cautious about
things like sit ups and if there is any doubt it's worth holding off a
little. Still there's plenty of other exercise - walking, swimming etc
which all help.
Everyone can only be an expert based on their own experience.
Unfortunately I'm an expert in complicated labour and long
recovery. There is a lot of rubbish sold in the shops and new stuff
that our mothers never had. Some things are good

You have to avoid the situps because your internal organs have not yet completely returned to their proper positions. My mom started situps too soon after my brother was born (back in the 70s) and twisted an ovary, well I suppose that is technically the fallopian tube, but you get the idea. It hurt and she had to go to a doctor to get untwisted...

Good news on the checks, Damon. Hope you don't need to visit B & Q's garden implements department. Am looking forward to the imminent birth of my sister's first baby, so will be coming to you for baby-sitting advice.

They sell all this crap
because new parents are scared sh*tless and want to be the Best Parents Ever, having vowed never to make the mistakes their own parents made. 30 years from now, when Sam has been out and on his own for a few years, he may have a little Sam Jr. and will ask for your advice. This is your reward. The only advice I can think of that's the least bit useful: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Oh! er... I mean, trust your gut instinct. That's what I meant to say... Best of luck on the leap-frog real estate game. :)

We all must strive to become the expert in our own lives! To follow anyones
advice can quickly lead to problems.
When we had our twins, I actually asked the doctor to throw in an extra stitch or two.
