Xeno-x -- you make a really good point with this post
Ignoring history is an important ingrediant to advancing the fundie agenda. Many of them talk as if the day after the ressurection, their religion existed in its present form. Existed with all perceptions and interpretations that are held today being instantly developed and instituted as practice on the very first Eater Monday. The truth is a much different matter, the Christian religion took centuries to develop, with the brand that the fervant fundies wave in our faces not beginning to develop until at least 1,500 years after the death of Christ.  Even then the "born again" notion of receiving Christ did not exist at this point, taking another 2 centuries to begin to emerge and even longer to enter into mainstream protestantism. From the times of the Moravian orders and John Wesley, being born again has drifted in and out the mainstream. Resurging 200 years ago briefly, but primarly on the European continent and then again on this continent just a few decades ago. Who do these bible thumpers think they are lying to when they insist that their brand of religion had a much more significant role in shaping our countries than it had? The Fundies are Johnny come latelies on the world religious stage. It might help a bit if some of them picked up a history book now and again.
