Besides being prepared
you need to spend enough time on a stage to be comfortable. The first time I played, I was a nervous wreck. By the show at CBGBs, i was fine.

I don't know where you get the confidence...
to get up on stage and sing. I don't think I could ever do that ... unless, I was totally wasted.
I occasionally (very rarely) do a little stand-up routine (amateur night at a comedy club). But, that's different ... cause, I can pretty much guarantee the reaction. Plus, I'm usually coked up then, too.
Why do you have to be a nonconformist like everybody else?
