- Go to Atkins Diet Risk
Those of us with kidney disease....
shouldn't be on Atkins. Period.
A dialysis diet - just like diabetes, end-stage kidney failure has diet as one important component of treatment - is very low in protein. I was given 60 grams of the stuff per day, way less than you get on Atkins. You are required to load up on pasta, and find other ways to add extra calories without extra protein, potassium or sodium. In other words, pick french fries over baked potato, or if you have to have baked, put a small amount of butter on that potato. That's because dialysis patients have virtually zero appetite, and what little appetite they do have is chased away by the dietitians scaring you off healthy food for fear of your getting too much potassium and stopping your heart. If people would read the damn book
they might understand the diet better. You can't understand the Atkins plan if you don't read every word in the book. Yes, the first two weeks can be a bit tough on the body, but you can protect your kidneys by drinking enough water. You eat lots of vegetables on Atkins, and a good bit of meat. You eat a good bit of fat, but most of it is vegetable oils. The only thing that you don't eat on the Atkins plan is grain products and starches. I was healthier on Atkins than I ever was in my life. And when you get to maintenance, I defy anyone to tell your meal from a non-Atkins diet one. Sheesh.

The wife's doing it...
My wife's currently doing the Atkins diet and I think it does state in the book that the diet should be used with a bit of common sense... it's only 'ideally' to be used intensely at the start, when you're trying to lose a chunk of weight in one go, and then used sensibly from there on as part of a 'balanced' diet.
But that's just my ten penneth

The one acception might be the American Heart Association diet, which tends to stay on track with a balanced diet.
Let me know how the lypo goes. Reminds me of my very worst date ever.

Come to think of it, I'm beginning to think that any popular diet is medically unsound. Just get lipo!
