I know that generally they lie to us. I am prepared to put up with some of it if it doesn't irk me too much and particularly if it entertains me. I don't know why but I never tried to watch 24.
As you say, there are some great radio stations available and I rarely put up with crappy radio adverts any more

Here's One

Writersjourney,

Dean Koontz wrote one of them. He's one of the best contemporary writers. But he's under-rated, I believe, because of what many perceive as his genre. Anyway . . . I think that his was entitled "Intensity." If I remember the titles of others, I'll let you know.

Jazwolf,

I would like the names of some of those novels. I would like to check them out and see how they do it.

Yes, "real time" sucks

Writersjourney,

I agree with you that the premise of writing fiction is to tell a story selectively, to lead the reader with what is important in regards to characterization and action. But I've seen the "real time" thing work with novels and the read was very intense. Personally, that's not my style. And don't think for a moment that TV executives are too dumb to try something like that.

Commercials are often much better crafted than the shows they support.
And music videos: For a writer, the images can be a gold mine of ideas. At least as far as imagining a scene. And the music, itself, may lend to a feeling that helps in the expressiveness of the piece --and inspires your own writing. There is nothing new under the sun, but it comes in different packages everyday.

Popular Culture Stinks to High Heaven

Jazwolf,

I have never watched the show but, as a writer, the premise sounds dumb to me. The idea of writing a story is precisely NOT to replicate real time, but to select those scenes that will move the story forward, advancing the plot and developing the character.

Not even "reality TV" would be dumb enough to give their audience a real time show.

But you are right -- commercial television (and popular culture in general) stinks to high heaven.

Yes, the commercials are better

M.P.O.,

Hey, I hadn't thought about that. You're absolutely right. Often the commercials are better than the programs. That's because we have many of our best and brightest working for advertising agencies. That's where the money is, for those who are so motivated.

I actually don't mind all the commercials...

In fact, I think I prefer them to most shows.  (I have a very short attention span.)

Commercials have slowly begun to creep onto the big screen too, though.  Now, that is annoying.

P.S. "24" is overrated, anyway.  Too "busy".  The writers try to cram waaay too much into each hour.  Terrorist bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, senate hearings, mountain lion attacks, etc.  No chance all that could happen in a mere 24 hours.  The writers painted themselves into a corner, by concocting such a gimmicky premise.
