4)  That is the relationship I have with that individual, and we constantly use the other to try on new ideas, look for a broader view, experience the passion of both sides of an issue. Whomever starts the conversation, the other has to defend the opposing view. Sort of like a two-person debating society. Its quite enlightening.

It might be improved by negotiation

but on the other hand that takes a lot of effort  when someone is locked into a way of thinking.  Sometimes it is best left

If people always side against you

it just means they opposing views.  What is really telling is what happens after they disagree.  How happy are they with resolution?  And are they willing to honestly consider your view and agree after careful consideration.
