Personally...

I prefer being in the top 25 of the "Most Popular Today" page, as well as trying to keep at least one blog visible in the New Posts area in order to attract hits. It's fairly well-known that people do research differently on the Internet - people tend not to like to dig through too many layers, preferring instead to make a minimal number of mouse clicks rather than going through page after page after page of material on a website. If I'm ranked #25 or higher on the "Most Popular Today" pages, that means that people don't have to click through five pages of blogs to find me (the main page plus the four pages of Most Popular Today blogs).

Early on in BN history - or at least my history with BN - controversy attracted hits. Chris got a lot of noses out of joint when he first came on deck by writing a blog entitled Women Make Poor Bloggers, for example. But it got him high rankings, although he eventually deleted that blog because it had served its purpose by the time of its deletion. Same thing with MHW - he wrote something about African Americans being inferior, and you should have heard the flame wars! You'd have thought he'd threatened someone with murder.

This is interesting
many of us here say we don't care about ratings when Number 1-we do, we want to beat out the others, it is the competition, Number 2- we like to be read and we like good comments. I try to stay in the top 100 but it is not easy and that is good because the other writers are good here. I personally don't care about Number #1 position but I want to be in the Top 100. Yesterday I had four blogs there and then today one slipped to 110. I think there are various reasons some stay at the top. They have been here awhile, they are good, they are controversial at times, their headlines draw readers. It is a combination of things. I try to be nice to everyone. I like to kid around or do parodys or jokes with Chris and Crabby but if they did not like it, I would stop. I try to use my humor in good fun, never to be mean. I may not agree with someone on an issue but that is his or her opinion, I won't stoop to name calling. I try to take a little from everyone here.
