robdon - I've suggested he joins the debating club at school, I think he will be good at it. But school doesn't start for a few weeks yet...

DrJPT - sometimes it feels like one hour at a time! lol

mystic - I don't believe in violence and I know you don't really mean that!

MerryAnne - so I've been told! It is a bit daunting to have more than one child when I was an only child, noone prepared me for this! lol

malcolm - they have the Playstation all day while I'm at work, although I believe the youngest has been too busy reading to play much. Its usually the Playstation they fight over!

muser, I couldn't agree more! Actually I find having two of them around is wonderful. I'm sort of dreading the situation in just over a week when my eldest comes back and then there will be three...

Pat - what a good idea! I wish I had found that one out 10 years ago! Now that they are both teenagers its slightly more difficult to put them into chairs...

Factor - the TV is usually on in my house, even when noone is watching! As a child I was banned from the TV, my parents didn't have one for years, so as an adult I don't mind if its on 24/7!

lovelylady - I have heard that from many people. Being an only child I wouldn't know!

May - mine too. But sometimes I think the being good all the time gets a bit much for him...

ginnie - he might be looking for attention, but I think you are right, birth order does play a role. He is the youngest and I've discovered that a lot of youngests are like him!

wislon - oh no, we are definitely not alone in this!

hehe even my brothers exhibit that weird awkwardness a lot of the time...
hopefully they grow out of it eventually!

haha, I wouldn't count on it.
Tormenting your brother or sister was one of the funnest parts of being a kid for me!!!  LOL

shooting hoops sounded like a good idea
I hope the peace prevails.. maybe your young son can channel his verbal energy into a creative direction?

Sibling Conflict....
Prime area.  One day at a time and keep doing as you know best!

I think a knuckle sandwich will stop the steady ...
stream that comes out of your youngest son's mouth.

Cass,
sometimes I think that I will need a whistle to stop my girls from fighting... and they are still small!  Oh well, that's what being a sibling is all about!

Sounds very familiar
but good for you for trying the fresh air alternative to PlayStation/X Box.

I'll be surprised if the peace lasts...having had two boys. Now, they are
the best of friends! It's so hard being a momperson...sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! You are doing a great job, Ca88andra, but keep that referee hat at the ready! sighhhhhhhhhh!

what I used to do to quell the battle impulse
was to place each one in a chair. The deal was,  Offender 1 could not leave his chair until he got the permission of  Offender 2. And vice versa. The only way they could end their "incarceration" was to negotiate and work together.  They're in their 30s now, and have used the technique on their own.

Yes, sometimes it seems like the only way to
get a little peace in the house with my 2 boys is to turn on the television... They can really wear me out with the bickering and one having that need to always hear himself talking! (Except mine is the older of the two.)

Cass,

If it's any consolation to you, my brother and sisters and I did that type of thing to each other all the time as kids.  Hope the peaces lasts!!  Good luck!!

I have one like that - well one minute he's like that and the next he's good as gold

posted by Azur on January 12, 2006 at 6:33 AM | link to this | reply

Is he looking for attention Cass?
I only have one boy...in the middle of two girls...and I'm sure birth order has a lot to do with things...obviously gender as well.  Sounds like you're being a good mediator!
