When the benefits start to get meager, that's when I freshen up the resume and start looking for another job.

OFFBEATS.....it wouldn't be so bad if they did increase the pay, but hubby
didn't get a raise for the last 3 years, and all I got was a lousy 25 cents over the last 2 years with the mumble of....no money available....

OI
Yeah, that might be a wake up call all right..lot's of places are no longer giving large benefit packages though. It seems if they increase the income, they feel it is okay to decrease the benefits..

Gradually We Awaken to the True Meaning of the "New Economy"

I think we are beginning to learn what the so-called "new economy" really means. The postindustrial economy, which relies on cheap imports from cheap labor for more than 40% of what we consume and requires the US to borrow $2 billion a day from other countries means we all have to work longer hours with less job security and fewer benefits.

It also means we lay off our skilled workforce and destroy our productive capacity in forms of freight rail transportation, bankrupt airlines, ancient waterways (remember Katrina), outdated electric power distribution lines, 30 year old oil refineries (contributing to high petroleum prices), and reduced electric power generation per capita (haven't built a nuclear power plant since the 70s).

Are the lower 80% of income brackets getting squeezed and ripped off? You bet we are! Is the upper 20% happen with their capital gains from short-term speculative trading? Is a pig happy in the mud?

Your brother's employer
is going to have a lot of trouble getting and keeping good employees with that approach

Sounds harsh
for you and your brother. Maybe you should use this to continue along the writing path with full haste, yet continuing to have the security if not the satisfaction of your regular job. Things like this certainly spur me on - especially during blue January days.
