Damned if you do and damned if you don't

The point is that the State Dept is trying to do something about the image problem it has. Compared to bombing Iraq, it is a hell of an improvement, I would think! Certainly first-gen Muslims in America have some difficulties and issues, so the picture may not be that rosy, but the image, in some parts of the world, of America as an anti-Muslim nation has to be corrected. Let's start somewhere.

FWIW, I am a Muslim, living in America. I've been here for 28 years — most of my life really — and I can no longer imagine living anywhere else. Particularly where I came from: Pakistan. Yes, I am Pakistani and will never abandon my heritage and origins, but I am an American today. Have I had difficulty living in the US? Being a Pakistani and a Muslim? Not really in any significant way that I can tell. No issues that would make me want to leave.

Can I criticise some US government policies and praise others? Damn right! And that is the freedom that I have, and accept, and enjoy — almost as instinctively as native-born Americans, after so many years. I would not want to change that.
