God is an awesome God.
He does have power over our every breath.  We want to humanize God.  But he is not a tame God whom we can control by just behaving ourselves.  If I went to the royal palace of an earthly king or queen, I would be on my best behavior.  How much more so in the presence of God.  That doesn't mean that God tries to make us afraid, but his very presence should bring us to a higher level of behavior.  He alone is God.

Fear and Trembling
I don't think it is God so much that we have to fear as it is our departure from God's ways. When we turn our backs on God we destroy ourselves. God is not an intemperate child around whom we must walk gingerly as if walking on egg shells. "Fear of God" is better understood as fear of our own ignorance that would turn us away from God. As Jesus said, "If the light in you is darkness how deep that darkness will be!" This is what we really have to fear.
