It's all in the meaning.
I think I know what you mean in choosing this quote. There certainly seems to be a lack of civility in our day. And I would imagine that such people don't discern the subtlties and beauty of life that more finely tuned people do. But to an extent civilization limits us. American indian cultures, for example, observe all sorts of beauty and subtlties unavailable to civilized white culture. That's what Castaneda's books were all about, reminding us of that.

I'd agree...once we can truly define civilized...then we can see how the quote makes sense. If one were to define civilization in terms of owned goods and ability to gain owned goods...then that puts an entirely different spin upon the quote.

Your quotes are extremely stimulating. So is your comment.......
I have no definitive answers only intelligence gathering questions.
But yes I believe in the "hassle" of voicing a challenge to any bit of offhand idiocy.
Quite often when I speak up it turns out that I'm the idiot for misunderstanding.
It doesn't matter where the idiocy lies if your approach is correct and non confrontational.
If both are interested in refining knowledge and not purveying lies than the chance to gain understanding is paramount and sought after by all.
You are a prolific writer. I like your depth

There's another issue here also - what constitutes being civilised?

Very nice. I would say that civility is merely a show, to mask the uncivilized nature that lurks beneath.
