Thanks for the tip, next time I'm at the library, I'll check out that book.  It sounds too me, he wasn't like scrooge.  Unfortuanately, there are scrooges in the world.

shelly, I can't remember. But read Tale of Two Cities and get a better
view of him.  He was very compassionate I remember that, and cared about outing the locals for allowing such miserable conditions for children.
