billy -- you're right
a lot of blandness and lack of feeling marks today's music
but vocally
i'm taliing about Britney -- and these boy bands.
If you listen to them.
they really can't sing at all. and the music is composed to fit their lack of talent.
I don't think I have heard Britney's songs expand behond about 5 notes
and the boy bands -- yuch -- they make me puke.
we need music rather than trying to sell shit to pre-pubescents that don't know the difference.

xeno-x...I totally agree w/ most of your assessment but would argue that
todays music suffers from too much vocal grand standing rather than too little (5 note range). The Carter Family, Woody Gutherie and Elizabeth Cotten all had voices with a fair bit of gravel and I doubt any could have attained a decent rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that wouldn't have come across as flat or shrill but they usually had meaning in their words and damn sure had lived-in exprssion in their voices.
People figured out there is lots of money in music and what is missing now is the pain that shaped the performers.
