Spitfire.....It is hard to up and leave....
We are all such creatures of habit and rocking the boat, like moving so far away, is a tough challenge. But you are a strong woman with a delightful sense of humor, and you will take that new town by storm. Sometimes, change is really good for us. Best of luck.....

Actually, Blanche, growing up in Chicago, um,
I hate snow!! I'm emotionally and physically damaged by it!!  Guess I'll have to get used to the weather change from Tampa for the past 11 years. It can't be worse than the winters in Chicago, though!!

Spitfire,
Oh, and Ashland is in the foothills of the Siskiyou mountains, probably the last town in Oregon before the Oregon-CA border, which is in the mountains, so if you like snow, bonus.

Avant, thanks. Well, think of it this way,
At least you're planning and deciding on your possible move. It's your decision and if you didn't want to or didn't feel right about it, you won't do it. I don't need to tell you to listen to your gut!

Spit Fire
Good luck on your move. Keep us posted. We're planning on moving to the beach next year sometime. I feel the same uncertainty.

How could they not be haunted.  The Angus Bowmer is the huge indoor theater. It looks like the Phantom of the Opera kind of theater. Of course, they've only been built since the 1950s, but still that's 50 years, plenty of time for ghosties to come a-haunting, especially with all drama around.

I think my volatile Russian grandfather knew something about his moodswings, he used to take a gallon jug of the lithium water home from the springs. Blech, though, the stuff tastes horrible.

posted by Blanche. on November 27, 2005 at 5:45 PM | link to this | reply

Blanche,
Naturally occurring lithium springs, huh? Well well. Now I really gotta check that out! Oh, and I wonder if those old theaters are haunted?

posted by SpitFire70 on November 27, 2005 at 5:39 PM | link to this | reply

I have good memories of Ashland, too, since I grew up a few miles away in Medford.  There's a beautiful park, called Lithia Park (there's a naturally occurring lithium springs there, hideous tasting stuff, but the fountain may still work).

The park is the central feature of the town, and the stream that runs through it.  The biggest feature are the three theaters there that have been there since the 50s, one of the first Shakespearean theaters in the US. In June, the outdoor theater opens and the season starts. I  have alwasy wanted to be there for the Feast of Will, but never have.  All the actors dress in period costume and dance and since and act in Shakespearean English.  The theaters are huge, it's a tourist magnet.

Blanche, yeah, Ashland. I'm gonna check that one out since you
mentioned it. You're in Seattle. Hmm, that's not very far from our new area in OR. Again, thank you so much for the imput. I can use all the personal opinions/advice I can get! It's so hard to shop for a new home and neighborhood without ever even stepping foot in the state yet!

posted by SpitFire70 on November 27, 2005 at 4:08 PM | link to this | reply

Spitfire,
Which town are you looking at, Ashland?  Southern Oregon State College is there.  I don't know how the job market is there. I've been in Seattle for over 20 years now.

posted by Blanche. on November 27, 2005 at 4:01 PM | link to this | reply

Spitfire,
Yep, Eugene is or was Hippy Central, it's a laid-back town. (Also, my alma mater, University of Oregon is there). I have many fond memories of Eugene. I don't know anybody there now, or I'd hook you up.  If I remember right, Lebanon is somewhere around Salem, the state capitol.

posted by Blanche. on November 27, 2005 at 4:00 PM | link to this | reply

Blanche, I can't thank you enough for all that personal info

We're still not exactly sure where we're going to move to, but M's new plant is going to be in Lebenon. I have heard and can tell from research that Eugene is a hippy college town but looks pretty nice. I just don't think the salary and job market there is in my favor. I'm also looking into Salem, Halsey, and a Albany. I'm gonna look into the town you mentioned, too. Thanks again!!

Libertine, I can't thank you enough for those comments.
I do believe everything significant such as these things DO happen for a reason; as scary and uncertain as they may be.

Spitfire,
It's hard being uprooted. I may be biased, though, since I was raised there, that I think that Oregon is a beautiful state that has some incredibly scenery and a unique outlook.  Ashland, Oregon has the Shakespearean festival and beautiful parks.  Eugene is the last bastion of the hippy movement, but coming into the 21st century.  Portland is a good-sized city with all the amenities. If you like to ski, there's Bend, Oregon and Mt. Hood near Portland.  The Oregon coast is magical and mystical with miles and miles of beach to walk. It's chilly this time of year, but the view and being there in the water, with the wind whipping your hair is exhilarating.  Give it a shot.

Wow, I'm just now catching up and seeing that you definitely are moving.  A friend of mine and her best friend took a trip literally across the country for a few months, about ten years ago I think.  She said that Oregon was actually their favorite place in the whole country.   I'm sure it's beautiful, but leaving everyone and everything you know - home - is so difficult, despite how wonderful your new destination may be.  I know that if I ever make that move from icky old Dallas to beautiful Colorado, it will be the hardest thing I've ever done. Best of luck to you.

Spitfire-I have family in Portland, Oregan; and they love it! So do I.
I spent winter out there a couple of years ago. (Incidentally, some friends bought a home in Tampa 3 years ago. They've already sold it and moved back here!)

This move is going to be tough for you, no doubt--but you will make the best of the opportunity, and one day you may even come to see it as a blessing. In the meantime, your friends are here for you.
