I have submitted pieces to magazines in the past.....I did have one narrative published in an educational journal, which was really, really exciting. CATE, California Teachers of English, but they don't pay.
I have had several poems published, but most don't pay. One did. Thanks...

I've had a lot of stuff published in local magazines, and perhaps you might care to explore this avenue?
Local mags are usually looking for topical articles, especially those of local/historical interest. Their editors tend to be more receptive, and less critical than those of the major mags.
Look at Rithie's blog too, there's always some sort of lead in there.
