GoldenMean,

Thanks for asking.  I was in Qatar and Afghanistan for the most part, but spent a couple of months in Bahrain and Uzbekistan.  As for the role of women, I’d need a whole blog.  But it varies with each country.  In Qatar, they had only slits in their shawls to see, while in Bahrain, they still wore all black but with small masks, expensive sun glasses, jewelry, Gucci shoes and bags (we used to joke that Bahraini girls know how to accessorize.)  I’ve seen women swim in bhurkas and teenage girls play soccer in bhurkas.  At the same time, some of the sexiest rock videos that I’ve ever seen were on Al Jazeera TV … go figure.

The point I was making here is that I sensed a quiet pride in the faith of most Moslem people.  They know who they are and what their heritage is.  So, they don’t need to demean other people’s religious practices to compensate, like we see too often in the States.

Just a friendly reminder, I am an agnostic with a Christian background.

But may I ask, which Islamic countries did you live in? How did the women fare in those countries? How about religious dissenters?

In the two strongest Islamic countries, Iran and Saudi Arabia, women are severly oppressed, as are religious dissenters, political dissenters, and non-Muslims to some extent. Iran and Saudi Arabia oppose each other in many ways, but they seem to agree on oppression.

I began my latest post saying that I have Muslim business associates who I consider be my friends. I once shared a Ramadan supper I was invited to by a devote Muslim, a Captain in the Jordanian Army. He was a fine fellow.

I have no quarrel with most individual Muslims in the practice of their faith. But Islam has the most violent radicals of any religion, and perhaps most Muslims sympathize with them, or remain silent. The radicals have plenty of violent written doctrine from the Koran and Hadith to justify their actions, much more than any other religion I know of. They do want to take over the world, no matter how long it takes, and I think they have the best chance of doing it of any religion in history.

Does any other religion in modern times have extremists who are beheading people and blowing themselves up at weddings and funerals of THE SAME RELIGION? I don't think so...

I have to agree with your post, for a change.  Attacking the Moslem faith for the sins of a few is very wrong.  I spent the last two years in Islamic countries.  And some of the finest, most considerate people I've ever met are Moslem.  (If you'd like, see one of my old posts -- "When I think of Muslims")
