Silver,
I gotta agree with you there. The channels don't take up any space.

Thanks for sharing your views with me.

I'm going to be making flying visits to all of you soon. Things are crazy around here lately.  Jacenta, thanks for the explanation. I really what they were doing sitting lined up like they were in the theatre or something.  In a sense they were, they were watching nature put on a show.

I've often wondered the same thing.  We currently have two boxes of miscellany that we packed when we moved last January--and have yet to unpack.  I don't even know what's in those boxes, anymore.  I keep thinking I should weed it out and then another part of me says, Just throw the whole damn thing out, don't even open it.  But I know there's SOMETHING precious in there...  I'm not as bad as I used to be.  I'm a packrat in recovery.  It really is a nice relief to get rid of all the junk, but sometimes I catch myself thinking, "If only I hadn't been so hasty."  And then I tell myself, "And what then?  What would you have done with that book if you still possessed it?  Nothing.  Not a damn thing.  Better gone than collecting dust."  It's something you really have to work at, and it's not easy!  Our minds just want to cling and cling and cling, don't they??? (I kinda like having a zillion channels to choose from, tho... at least they don't take up space.)

word.smith...

I keep telling my hubby we should buy a very large house with high ceilings and keep it empty, so I could see what it is like to have open space.  It is amazing how things accumulate, throughout the years. haha

Thank you for visiting my pet post.  The animals were lined up like that, looking through the window, because the wind was blowing the leaves and they enjoyed seeing the movement.  Cute kids, huh?

word.smith, I think that perhaps people feel a false sense of security when surrounded by things.

Just think, even if you do not use or watch, it's nice to know that you could if you chose to. It's all about choices

Word:

Not even that.  Some really off the wall stuff emerge from the geological strata.

I am a pack rat myself...but I pay close to 50$ for my 80 channels....
I am thinking of dropping it, but then I'd only get 3, 6, 9, 10 and 12....
the family would go nuts, especially hubby...he wouldn't be able to use that remote very well!

"Why do we think that who are is tied up in the tons of stuff we own?  And why do we keep adding more things to all the stuff we don’t need?"

I totally agree with you, I think we have been brainwashed by marketers into believing that our lives will not be complete without so much stuff. I personally don't buy into it, and every time I'm tempted to buy something I remember to stop and ask, Do I really need this?

that's a big job...
simplifying that much so fast. That might be the kind of thing you need to do slowly. But first thing to do is break the pack rat habit, otherwise you'll be simplifying forever.

Cass, I need to take lessons from you.

Rhiannon,
Sentimental value at the time, maybe?

Offbeats, that gives validity to the theory
that junk replicates itself.

Reni,
I guess that has to happen when you're falling over all sorts of unused stuff.

Libertine,

The stuff we have sure does pile up when we're not looking.

I move so often that I rarely keep much junk. I have one closet and that's not even full, one bookshelf because I can't afford to buy too many books so I borrow mostly - library and friends. I do have more than one pair of shoes though!

Ah, the virtues of de-junking
I have geological layers of crap that I don't use, and am currently getting rid of.  I don't know why I kept some stuff.

Well, I purge every 6 months or so, but 6 months later I have just as much if not more..Purging is good for the soul!! Good luck!

I'm in the middle of "simplifying" as we speak. I'm tired of all the stuff

I feel your pain. I have way more shit, literally and figuratively, than a person living alone ever should!

Cosy, that arrangement sounds like heaven.

and life is much more simple.  Wow, your entire wardrobe is black and white.  I gotta bring you down here for a trip to sort me out.   I hope things settle down for you soon.  The spaces, remember I was having them about a month ago or less?  If you downloaded hotbar get rid of it.  That was what was causing me to have those spaces.  Smiley central works lots better. You get a space when you insert them, but nothing near as large as this one.  See if that works for you.  Just as I discovered it, I think you had also told me to tick the advanced users box and delete the code in the box. Hotbar inserts a code in the comments box that causes the huge space.

I have four pairs of shoes. One to dance, One to run, One to wear to work, and my flip-flops that make me very happy! You think I'm simple enough? Did I mention my entire closet is black and white? I am a creature of habit...no colors for me, lol. sorry i haven't stopped in...it's been super crazy for me lately....and now I have these awful spaces after each of my comments...I think i'm going to cry.

Malcolm,
we're just as bad as the animals. Yesterday I was watching National Geographic, there was a bird that was stealing all sorts of stuff (blue) just for his lady love.  Seems she loves the colour. We are so much like that, collecting all sorts of stuff, useful and not and then not having enough space to move around in.

It is amazing
how much we collect isn't it? And yet, letting go of even the most useless, irrelevant items is so hard. I wish you luck but make sure you don't later regret ditching something that you might just miss?
