Taps, I'll join you.  With our heads in the sand or beneath our feathers, we'll pretend the problem is not there.  Work for you???

I'm in debt for the new roof I had to have on my house while I was a broke student in school (turned out my house had FOUR layers of roof on it, and the weight was starting to cause structural damage).  I DON'T LIKE being in debt but am so very thankful for a really good job.  Too many Americans are in debt plus they are out of work.  I fear for their mental/emotional/physical well being.  Yah know?

JanesOpinion, I know that it is wrong of me to put it off on others, but this is a problem that I don't even want to think about or deal with.  I want to hide my head and pretend that everything will be all right.  But, everywhere I look, everyone is desperate for money relief.

good point, writersjourney.  We want everything and we want it cheap.  We've lost the ability, it would seem, to discipline our fiscal habits in our personal lives and as a country.

We Have Destroyed Our Revenue Base
Jane, I see a strong correlation between the growing federal budget deficit and the deepening balance of trade deficit, and it doesn't surprise me. When a nation moves from a being a productive society to being a consumption society (destroying internal productive capacity and consuming more than we produce through expanded imports) it forces wages down and forces the cost of government services up. The problem is compounded by the loss of revenue to support those diminishing but more expensive services. I think the problem is closely linked to our growing dependence on cheap imports over the last 35 years.
