1. As usual, how about some documentation?
2. How long ago did this happen?
3. If prior to 1998, how does that reconcile with repeated Republican successes at the polls in 1998 and in every presidential and congressional election since, particularly last year's record number of votes for Bush?

This sampling is valid ...

the Republican Party acknowledged long ago that there are fewer individuals that consider themselves Republicans nationwide than there are individuals that consider themselves Democrat.
