Sorta like people. An alegory, methinks.
Folks in other parts of the world have no qualms about eliminating anmal species.

I see what you're saying as that's been the case with deer, for example. I think the reason the quote struck me so funny is that he was going on about an animal that was going to be extinct...but yippee, now we have more than enough so it's a good year to be a hunter. The quote itself (not the logic behind it) sounded a wee bit crazy to me.
The whole thing reminds me of one of my favorite books from when I was younger: Bless the Beasts and Children. Basically, the animals were herded for hunters. A group of camp misfits tried to get the animals free. When they pushed themselves to the limit trying to get the animals free, they learned that even with the open gate, the animals wouldn't leave.

I don't hunt, but I understand his take on things.
The thinking is skewed, but the bison are populating out of control.
Now, Ted Turner allegedly owns property up there where people pay hundreds of dollars to shoot a bison. You make an appointment, they have the individual picked out for you to cull (kill), if you need a decent rifle (either through not owning none, or bringing an insufficient one) they will supply that. You get half the meat, the skin and the head are extra and ayou get them once they are processed.
The alternative is herding them into a chute and shooting them, then dealing weith the products. (What, BisonHelper, again?!).
