Ca88andra,
I think that's why they keep making movies like Seabiscuit, for that one thrilling scene at the end.

Blanche, it was pretty amazing, even for someone like me who really doesn't care about horses. I definitely had a lump in my throat.

Joe - that sounds remarkably similar. Is it the fashion to wear hats to those parties?

muser - I rarely wear hats and didn't wear one that day either. I just hate "hat hair".

ginnie - I guess its fun in different ways for different people. Some like the horses, some the fashions, some just like the opportunity to get together with friends and family.

I wish sometimes Americans still had something to get excited about, really, as a country. I picture this and I think what would it be like to be there, watching the Diva coming in first again?

This is how Derby Day
is in Kentucky. There are Derby parties EVERYWHERE and life generally stops when The Kentucky Derby begins.

I've invented a dessert called the Diva for my next blog entry (Not yet posted), inspired both by Eva the Opera singer and by the mare. Great post.

Sounds like a great way to spend a day
We have the Grand National here but I think that is now more about huge corporate hospitality and, despite the best marketing efforts, isn't and probably never really has been the 'people's race.' Glad you had fun.
