I think one of the most interesting southern accents I have ever heard was that of a fella I worked with from North Carolina. His drawl was thick, his vocabulary outstanding, all with an air of sophistication.

I have a Southern Drawl, myself. But, I could swim in the words spoken by Carolinians or Georgians. I could close my eyes, and tell anybody, male or female, whom spoke with such wonderful accent from this region to simply speak to me.

You are right that the South has produced some of our greatest writers and other artists.  The South and its people have much to offer.  Many of those on my favorites list live in the South, including kiddo75, who lives in Mississippi, of all places!  When I was growing up, however, there was too much I disliked.   As for southern accents, I guess it depends on who is speaking.   Hemlocker

I'm from Southern New England-does that count? Having lived in all parts of the country and visited several parts of the world, I've heard many types of accents and enjoyed listening to each one.  Never have I judged a person based on whether he (or she) said "ya'll" ,"how ya doin'?", or "It's wicked hot out, ayuh."

That being said, though, why do we never hear a Boston accent on ANYONE from the Jerry Springer Show?

Ain't THAT the truth!
I attended a workshop in Cleveland for yearbook editors when I was in high school, and everyone commented on my SOUTHERN accent! They asked if I was from the South, and I said "Yes, Southern Ohio!"

funny, i was just having a conversation today about that sort of thing

I have a lot of family in the south... and so I had much to say when my friend started telling me "how they act down there"

*sigh

It's amazing the sorts of things people believe...
