Joe, it's amazing what you can live with,

when you close your eyes to it.

It sounds to me like the people of Jamaica have ALREADY closed their eyes to it. It sounds like violence is running rampid throughout the streets.

Lensman,

What you propose sounds reasonable, but we are not a reasonable people. Many of us put party politics before patriotism, which is why we have so much violence come election time.  Right now, we have people calling all the talk shows expressing outrage at what the Chief of Staff said, (as if it isn't the truth)  Martial law?? We would have absolute anarchy. Every body and his mother would be out on the streets burning tyres and blocking roads at having their rights taken away. Then next week, they'd be out there again protesting about the condition of the roads.

For a small island, we are really and truly ungovernable. Personally, I think we have too much freedom that we don't know what to do with.

Sounds like it's almost getting to be a job for the army.  I know there was a joint police/military raid, but maybe a little martial law for a while, long enough to penetrate the impenetrable fortress and do a little housecleaning.  One convenient thing about Jamaica is that it's an island, no borders for them to escape across.  I guess they could go by sea or air, but airports are good places to bottleneck them and the sea would be risky for them.  On the other hand, it's all up to the politicians, as usual.  And we know a thing or two about politicians.

Cosy, I wonder the same thing myself.
The natural disasters are much more frightening in that they take so many live and leave many others dislocated.

There is corruption to some extent,
but some attempts are being made to deal with this.  Sad to say, but the govt. is now hiring from overseas to help with this problem.  There has been some success so far.

Word-I am sorry to hear of all these crippling incidents in Jamaica. I only pray that the government will take control of the country soon. Thanks for sharing. Keep hope alive. I am praying for you. Violence cannot win. Peace will.

It sounds like a lawless place. There must be corruption at the security level.

And the baby....Oh Lord what wrenching grief. May you and yours stay safe. Your husband's sentiments are well expressed and true. Take care.

Hem,
As bad as it sounds, these things are not widespread. They mostly happen in the ghettos, however, the island is small so it's a given that many of us brush against one or more of these areas to and from work.

I agree that's a terrible way to die.

Offbeats

Things are way out of control. The root cause is something that has been festering for years. I believe it is something that took root in the late 1970's and has now spiralled out of control.

(Politicians + Money + Power Hunger) + (Uneducated Young Men + Guns (from Politicians) ) = Chaos

Did I mention corruption? Eg. A soldier - all of 40 years old - was arrested and charged recently. He had 500 rounds of ammunition in his possession. It seems as if he intended to sell these to the criminals.

Luckily, most of this activity is confined to Kingston. People in the country don't put up with this type of behaviour. As horrible as it sounds and I hate to think about it - country people practise 'jungle justice' on these criminals. They are lucky when they get away alive.

I think our tourism would die if these things started happening in the resort areas.

We do what we can to protect ourselves, plus we place ourselves in God's hands. There's not much more we can do.

We do need lots of prayers.

Good grief, it sounds "out of control" down there! What the heck is the root cause of all this violence? I sure hope you and hubby take a lot of safety measures when you go out and about!! Geex, I so love your country, hate to hear all this. I have known for years Kingston was a horrible crime infested place, but this is bad even for them!!

It seems that anything else I could say or do would come across empty and platitudinal--except for the less than generous remark that crossed my heart regarding the masculine gender.  You and your countrymen have my compassion.  All of you are in my prayers.
