Thank you for recommending my Blog, archiew. Max and I became more aware of
how important it is to be prepared for emergency situations when we moved to a rural area in the mountains. We were cityfolk who through trial and error learned to heat with wood, stock food items, basic+ first aid supplies, etc. We made a lot of mistakes...we were often cold our first year up here. We were helped by two other families who also live here year round. After 9/11, it occured to us that if there were a terrorist attack in which we lost power for a long period of time, we would be in trouble! We were in an icestorm in Atlanta when we didn't have power for almost a week...I had a manual can opener - I was shocked at how many of my neighbors didn't! Max and I realized we wanted to become as self-sufficient as possible. We have made strides, but we still have a way to go.
