That and people are always walking around saying that their Give-a-shit meters are broken.

I usually always use the "Politely Nod" technique. This usually works like a champ unless my companion gives me a quiz when he (or she) is finished speaking to get my opinion (or just to see if I was paying attention and not just politely nodding). When caught like this, I usually scream "Snake!!" and run away.
