Well, I'm hoping...
that this will help children to get a different perspective on being teased and help them to turn things around non-violently. I was teased and picked on and humiliated unmercifully by my classmates as a child because I was quiet and shy due to situations at home. I was also a rather independent child and developed a strong sense of myself and wasn't willing to compromise to fit into their little cliques. That didn't make me too popular.

I guess my purpose with this story is to teach children to be themselves and not be moved by other people's opinions because they are going to think what they want no matter what we do. If a child is comfortable in who they are then they can overcome others opinions. This world is not an easy place and children must learn that compromising who they are to make others happy will only cause them a lot more pain in the long run.

Sadly, this kind of episode is played out...

...in many schools throughout the country--with the name Colombine being the one that seems to represent this tragedy.

One day--time and time again--a young person (or two) seems to come out of the woodwork to open fire on teachers and classmates.

Everybody seems shocked and wonder how this came about--much as what happened in the case of Herbert and his peers--and, then, people "suddenly" remember how said shooter was teased about some aspect of him/her such as body-shape, clothing-style, stutter, etc.--and, generally, not just lightly teased on some occasion but, instead, day-in and day-out taunting and bullying.

Too bad that those shooting incidents couldn't have been solved as happily as was what happened in Whistle Forect!

Peace!
