I was with my Mommy in a store when I was that age, and...
...I decided to take off on my own adventure (and, unknown to me, Mommy observing my every move and listening to me talking to myself).
Anyway, I was just wandering all over the place and saying, "I don't see Mommie-Dommie anywhere!"
And "Mommie-Dommie" knew that she was the last thing I wanted to see at that time because I was enjoying my independence so much, so my words weren't said in fear or frustration but, instead, in a way that implied that I was enjoying my freedom.
Your brother sounds like a real oner! He wouldn't happen to be a writer, musician, and/or visual artist, would he? He definitely seems as if he were ready to take on the world after having lived in it for a mere two years!

It's a good thing it happened in the early hours of the morning. There's no telling what would have happened if he'd taken off later in the day when the streets got busy. He's was an adventurous toddler.
