Joe - but the bridesmaids aren't competing with the bride for the groom (or not usually...)

Usual - I agree. I get sick and tired of people who blame losses on everything but their own bad play or whatever. Sometimes I wonder if anyone takes responsibility for anything nowadays.

Moondawg - I really don't know how the name change came about, but I'm guessing they wanted to find a name that Sydney people could relate to. Funny that as soon as the team got into the grand final, they rediscovered their Melbourne roots...

dog1 - thank you! I had to grin at your comment. What I find amazing in the States is the number of people that turn out to high school games - over here you are lucky to get one parent per player and maybe the odd grandparent.

wordsmith - its one of the strange things about humans that I often wonder about. My youngest son thinks I wonder too much about everything...

TIMMY - the season is finished! However some of the teams do travel overseas to play exhibition matches - usually London I think. But next year you should have a look if you can.

Cassie, that might be a bit idealistic.
I mean. ., when's the last time you saw people at a wedding throwing rice at the bridesmaids?? LOL

Everyone likes winning...
but I think it definitely takes grace and maturity to lose with dignity. Nothing is more unattractive to me than someone who cannot lose (or win, for that matter) with grace.

In todays
competitions no one remembers who finished second. What I found interesting was the change of the name from the Bloods to the Swans.

Ah, but for the competitive spirit . . .
Hey, Cass
From reading your post, it would seem that we have a similar mind set here in the United States in regard to winning. As I write, I'm listening to a rather large crowd cheering on the high school football team that's playing across the street from where I live. "Belfast, number one! Belfast, number one!" they shout. Funny though, I don't hear the other team shouting, "Rockland, number two!" Found your perspective on this interesting, and enjoyed. . . .

I agree Cass,
It's funny how we can remember who ran last in a race, but we can't remember who was second. The effort must nontheless be recognized. Today it may be a second place finish for a competitor, but they usual work very hard to get there. Too true that we don't much appreciate anything other than first.

Flame - AFL is not soccer! It's Australian Rules Football - similar to Irish football. Soccer is not as big here as AFL and rugby is only really big in NSW and Queensland. After the game the parties will be endless and the drinking as well. Celebrations will continue for days.

I never knew that down under, people were that soccer mad. I thought they were either Rugby mad or criket crazy. Thanks, through you I am now aware that, Australia is not only about Criket and Rugby. Could you please tell me how many teams are in the Australian league? And the winners of the league ,what do they do after? Is there a sort of champions leagues like in Europe or Africa? I madly will be glad if you could give some details. Cheers.
