Damon, went on a Virgin train last week and it had a plug socket under the table so you could charge your mobile. Apart from that, can't think of anything decent to say about the rail system. Except that Glasgow Central is beautiful and Preston station is surprisingly ornate. And Huddersfield's got a decent pub on the platform. In fact, now I think of it, there are a lot of stations worth a visit. Shame you have to drive from one to the other to see them.

Castles...
...all the way and a party town to finish off - sounds like a great trip!
You'll have to drop in next time you're over.

Ha Damon!
Pretty awful about the rail system! We were near Dornoch at Skibo Castle for 6 days, St. Andrew's for a couple of days and Devon for a few more...Bovey Castle. Then we were near Brighton with relatives for the remainder of the trip. Only got sprinkled on once..and that was only for a few minutes and then the sun came out again!!

...it was brilliant, until Thatcher had the wonderful idea of breaking the national rail company up into 20+ train operating companies, plus a a company to look after the track (now gone bankrupt) plus another to handle the freight traffic.
Now, it's a mess. And, as usualy when capitalism takes hold, the focus now is on "shareholder value" rather than customer safety or satisfaction.
That's progress!
Oh, and we keep the rain myth going so we don't get too many people coming. Don't tell anyone, OK? Where were you, by the way?

Even those of us who took their country's side...
...on Iraq thought that restauranteur was nuts for pouring his French wine down the drain in the street!
I mean, French or no French, good wine is good wine. Plus, we really love the French, for their culture, their romanticism, and our shared civic values. Some of us just don't want to admit it.

I thought the British rail system was supposed to be brilliant?
Sounds just a bit complex! Haven't seen or heard of that movie but thanks for the 'heads up'! Just got back from the UK after two glorious weeks of fabulous weather...I swear this 'rain' thing is a myth!
