majroj, yes, parrots learn everything that they hear, especially if it is said with some emotion!!
When our parrot got lost in Rio, we died that day, somehow the word got out into a city of 14 million people at the time.

There is a city called Niteroi across the bay from Rio.

Someone heard the bird in Niteroi, someone who knew us, heard the bird say,( ficticious children's names here) "Annie, Patty, Rebecca, Melanie, Robert, Sam" and knew it was our bird.......we got Louro back in four days time.

We came to believe in prayer that week.

Our cook taught our parrot to say, " Preto, sou telefone", in Portuguese. It is a racial epithet. We didn't know that she had done this.

When the little 70 year old woman who did our ironing came crying to mom, saying that she had to leave our employ because the parrot teased her mercilessly and it hurt too much, and Mom found out why, the cook was dismissed summarily.

Whenever Louro said the epithet after that we had a squirt bottle for Maria to squirt him with and he soon gave it up. She then taught him to say, "Maria Bonita", pretty Mary, which pleased both Maria and my mother, Mary to no end.

Parrots! Crikey!

At the pet and feed, we inherited a ten year old green parrot of some indistinguished sort who had a potty mouth, er, beak. He couldn't stay in the showroom, Taco would have none of it and some of the customers objected.  No one would buy him and it just ran contrary to GIVE him away. He was banished back in the groomers' country and wound up going home with one of them, if memory serves me.
