Comments on Pledge of Allegiance Unconstitutional in Schools!

Go to An Unfortunate Outburst of Intense PatriotismAdd a commentGo to Pledge of Allegiance Unconstitutional in Schools!

As I wrote in another comment to a blgger who wrote the same thing

when I went to school, I learned the pledge without those words then Congress inserted "one nation under God",  in 1954, after being lobbied by religious leaders during the Cold War.

I think the pledge in school could be handled like the swearing in, in a courtroom, where you can either swear or affirm, to me it is the same as the pledge, kids can say the pledge and leave out, "one nation under God".
In my wifes school kids that are Jehovas Witness don't have to pledge but they have to stand.

I'm Sure If You Were Considered An Oddity Because You...

refused to pledge your allegiance to Satan every morning in school then you'd see it as coercion.

You can't recognize it as coercion because pledging allegiance to God matches your religious beliefs.

And by the way . . .
Lucky me - I lived in Newdow's hometown of Sacramento for 18 years. I now live next to O'Haire's hometown of Rossford, Ohio.

Thanks for the comment, Dennison!
You demonstrate precisely the flawed reasoning behind the new ruling, that being exposed to the words "under God" is somehow coercion to embrace religion. You triggered a couple of new thoughts on this that I will add to the original post as an edit. Check it out, let me know what you think.

You're Right...You're No Scholar...

The case was thrown out on technicality. The Supreme Court didn't vacate the lower court's ruling, nor did it reverse the lower court's ruling. The ruling stood but couldn't go any further because there technically was no way for the Supreme Court to hear the case.

The Pledge of Allegiance should have never been changed in the first place.

Perhaps you'll like it more when we change the phrase "Under God" to "Under Vishnu?"

America stands for the freedom to worship as we individually see fit. No majority, no matter how large that majority might be, has the right or authority to foist its faith on freedom-loving American patriots.

If you want a theocratic government then please join the Taliban. We'll send American Marines to whereever you and your gang of religious zombies decide to call home so they can shoot at your oppressive ass.
