Comments on Two Old Ladies and Shotguns

I think you've explained the problem right there, and...

...--when it comes to pity--I pity everyone who has to live in such a mess.  This is everyone from you to those kids who have gotten so used to death and destruction that they can barely comprehend the seriousness of what it means to take another life.

If any good has come of Hurricane Katrina, it has forced New Orleans to show its dirty underwear--something that had been hidden behind those wonderful sight, sounds, tastes, and smells that the powers-that-be prefer for the tourists to be noticing.

But the dirty underwear of New Orleans was already starting to spread into those places that are THE places to go, but there was sort of an ignore it and it will seem to go away sort of mindset.

It's time that the neighborhoods such as you live in don't continue just to be ignored and further deteriorate.

You've shared the nastiness of your neighborhood with us here, so keep on writing about it so that, hopefully, somebody who can will get some attention to it and turn it around.

I think that, as with New Orleans, there will be several people who would be glad to go elsewhere and completely start over and others who would like to stay put but with renovations and caring.

An inventory should be taken of your neighborhood with people saying what they would honestly like to do.  Then, crews of volunteers can get together and turn the place in which you live around.

Schools should be looked into and improved.

It doesn't always take building brand new buildings to improve a school but simply fixing up what is there and--most importantly--making the learning experience inviting.

There should, perhaps, be some kind of cash-for-guns program in the neighborhood--which would cut down on a lot of the murders.

Then, police could come in and keep the streets safe.

It would take some doing, but it can be done, as shown by what has been happening in the South!

Blessings!
AJ

I Must admit...
I don't have a gun, either. I've never owned one, though I have shot one a long time ago. And, believe me, I wouldn't want to have to shoot anyone but I would defend my life and home if necessary.

Whimsy, thank you for being honest.   I don't really know what I would do in such a situation, if I even had a gun available, which I don't.

Even the law protects...
someone who is defending their home. And, yes, if someone was breaking into my house, I believe I could shoot them. Of course, I would try to simply wound them but after living in the neighborhood I've lived in for the past four and a half years, I can promise you that you can either kill or be killed. Many people no longer teach right from wrong and I've lived around the type of people who break into people's homes and they have absolutely no regard for human life. They've seen so many people die as kids, that to them it is just an everyday type occurence and means nothing. There have been at least three people who have died just outside on the street where I live since I moved here. And, there may have been more than that. I'm just aware of those three. And, at one point, I had to call Children's Services about the couple who used to live across the hall for hurting their children. They finally moved out after she stabbed him in the shoulder for punching her in the stomach.

After one boy (probably 13 or 14) died across the street, I ran into two teenagers hiding on the stairway down the hall and they were laughing about the way the boy's body was jerking as he was dying on the street. Most of the kids down here don't even believe that they will live to be adults. They are hard and nasty and have no respect or regard for anyone but themselves.

People in America have become way too naive about things in this world. They think that everyone can be reasoned with and they feel sorry for people who are thieves or some other type of criminal and start wanting to pat them on the back and say "I'm so sorry you had it so hard." That's garbage! I grew up in an abusive situation and was molested by a guy at church when I was ten. I had a louzy childhood but that didn't give me an excuse to turn around and steal or hurt other people. That's foolishness!

For all of the people out there who feel so sorry for people who use all that junk as an excuse for getting away with committing crime, I'd like to invite them to come down to my neighborhood and live for about a year without the luxury of money or a car or a way out and then tell me how much you feel sorry for them. Pity is the absolute worst thing that the American people have done for criminals. There is a difference between right and wrong and as long as people refuse to deal with that, I'm going to do what I have to to protect myself.

The only way I would do something violent is if...

...it would have to be done in self-defense and/or defense of others.

Material goods should never be put ahead of life--not even low-life.

Even those two old ladies simply fired shots into the air and scared the looters away.

This is certainly a cute story, though.  Reminds me of Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies.

Cheers!
AJ

Whimsy, would you shoot at people breaking into your home?    I don't know if I could do that.   I hope I never have to be tested in that way.
